For your first gym visit, wear clean clothes that allow the activity, appropriate athletic shoes and the support layers you need. Check the facility’s rules, then test the full outfit at home. A men’s or women’s label does not decide how you train or how much coverage you should want.
Start with the same four questions
- What activity or introductory session are you attending?
- What support and coverage feel comfortable for your body?
- What does the facility require?
- Will you change or shower before going elsewhere?
Answer those before buying a matching set. A basic top and flexible bottom you already own may be a perfectly useful start.
Build the outfit around your support needs
| Need | Choice to consider | Try-on check |
|---|---|---|
| Breast support | Sports bra suited to the activity and your fit | Band stability, cup coverage, straps and comfortable movement |
| Groin support | Comfortable briefs, boxer briefs or the short’s intended liner | Pouch, seams and waistband together |
| Full leg coverage | Training pants or leggings, optionally with an outer layer | Seat/knee room and opacity |
| Arm/torso coverage | A tee or light long sleeve | Hem lift, armholes and reach |
Sports bras: match activity and actual fit
Running and jumping can require a different support choice from a gentle class. Compare the manufacturer’s activity guidance, but assess the actual bra: the band should remain stable, cups should contain comfortably, and straps should not dig in. Try several cuts and sizes rather than sizing down in the hope of creating more support.
REI’s fitting guide offers a useful starting process. If you experience persistent pain or cannot find a comfortable fit, seek qualified fitting or clinical advice rather than treating discomfort as something to endure.
Leggings, shorts and pants
Try the waistband seated and during a comfortable bend. Check the fabric in the lighting and positions you expect to use. A gusset is a construction detail; it does not automatically mean the garment is intended to replace underwear. Check the product’s directions and your preference.
For shorts with an integrated liner, determine what type of liner it is. A separate layer may be unnecessary if the liner is intended for direct wear and feels comfortable, but there is no single rule for every body or product. The liner and underwear guide explains the options.
Footwear before accessories
Tell a fitter or staff member what you will be doing. Running, a court sport and strength training have different requirements. Avoid assuming that a fashionable sneaker or the most cushioned shoe is appropriate for everything. A tracker, gloves or a new gym bag can wait unless the planned activity needs them.
What to bring on day one
- A water bottle and the facility’s required towel.
- A locker lock if needed.
- Any activity-specific item the instructor requests.
- A clean change of the layers you expect to need afterward.
- A separate place for used clothes, emptied after the visit.
Check the changing-room setup in advance if privacy, accessibility or storage affects your plan. That practical information can matter more than which logo is on the shirt.
What to leave for later
Wait on specialist outfits until you know what you enjoy doing. Start with one useful combination, learn from the session and wash the kept items as instructed. Add quantities around laundry rather than assuming everyone needs three full sets.
Common questions
Can I wear a loose top?
Yes, if it gives the coverage you want without interfering with the activity or equipment. A close fit is not compulsory.
Do I have to wear leggings?
No. Shorts or training pants may suit you better. Choose from the cuts that fit your body, regardless of the department.
What if my current clothes are cotton?
Try the suitable pieces you have and assess comfort. If they become distracting when damp, that is a specific reason to compare a different fabric.
Will the right outfit remove first-day nerves?
Clothes can make preparation easier, but cannot guarantee confidence. An orientation or asking staff what to expect may be more useful than another purchase.
