Hemp is the fiber people try once and then buy again. It breathes like linen, gets softer with washing like cotton, and outlasts both. My first was a Buck Mason hemp Yuma tee. It is still in rotation. Hemp shirts are the next step. The brands doing them well use blends of 45 to 55 percent hemp with organic cotton, which keeps the hand soft from the first wear.
Six below, from a $44 tee to a $242 hemp twill jacket, checked on each brand’s site. This post contains commissionable links. Images were made with AI from the brands’ product photos.
What hemp feels like
Crisp on day one. A 7 oz hemp-cotton jersey has more body than a cotton tee of the same weight and a slight dry hand. By the fifth wash it is softer than the cotton tee. By the twentieth it is the softest thing you own, and the shape is still there. Hemp fibers are longer and stronger than cotton, which is why the collar doesn’t bacon and the hem doesn’t twist.
It also takes garment dye well, so hemp pieces from Jungmaven and Save Khaki come in a sun-washed range of earth tones that cotton has a harder time holding.
Jungmaven Baja Tee
The Baja Tee is 55 percent hemp, 45 percent organic cotton, 7 oz, $62, in fifteen colors. Classic fit, men’s sizing. One reviewer says it runs a bit small in the shoulders. Stucco beige, coyote and navy are the three that work with everything. Cut and sewn in Los Angeles.
Jungmaven Fields Polo
The Fields Polo is the same 55/45 blend in a 7 oz pique, $110, in twelve colors. Slightly relaxed, three buttons, split hem. A slubby, garment-dyed take on the knit polo. Men’s sizing.
Save Khaki United Work Shirt in Cotton Hemp
The Work Shirt in Cotton Hemp is 55 percent hemp, 45 percent cotton, 4 oz, pigment-dyed, $180, in tea, petrol, salt, union blue and faded navy. The lightest overshirt you can buy and the one for a Florida winter. The page says relaxed and modern fit; the 6 foot 2 model wears large, so consider an XL for room.
Jungmaven Topanga Shirt
The Topanga Shirt is 10 oz hemp twill in coyote, pistachio or navy. Classic fit with roomy shoulders, and Jungmaven says to wear it as a jacket. It was on final-sale markdown at $169 from $242 when I checked, and several colors were XL and XXL only, so confirm a large is there before you order.
Jungmaven Olympic Jacket
The Olympic Jacket is 10 oz hemp twill, 55/45, garment-dyed, $242, in eleven colors. A classic French chore jacket cut with patch pockets. Unisex sizing, with large in stock in most colors. The chore coat guide puts it against five others.
Mollusk Hemp Tee
The Hemp Tee is $44 in navy, forest, white and true black. The value entry. Sizes stop at XL and the 6 foot 1 models wear large, so there is no cushion. Sale is final.
Hemp vs. linen vs. cotton
| Fiber | Breathability | Softness on day one | Softness after 20 washes | Durability | Wrinkles |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hemp | High | Medium | Very high | Highest | Some |
| Linen | Highest | Medium | High | Medium | Heavy |
| Cotton | Medium | High | High | Medium | Light |
Hemp is the middle path. Cooler than cotton, more durable than linen, and it holds a garment dye better than either. If you want one fiber for a hot climate that you can also wash without thinking, this is it.
Frequently asked questions
Is hemp clothing scratchy?
Not in a 45 to 55 percent hemp and organic cotton blend, which is what every piece above uses. Pure hemp canvas is stiff; hemp jersey is not.
Does hemp shrink?
Slightly, like cotton. Wash cold, hang dry. Jungmaven’s jersey is pre-washed and the brand says men’s-sized styles fit true.
Why is hemp clothing more expensive than cotton?
Smaller supply and more processing. Hemp fiber has to be retted and softened before it can be spun into jersey. The premium is modest at Jungmaven and Mollusk and disappears over the life of the shirt.
Which hemp shirt should I buy first?
The Jungmaven Baja Tee in stucco beige at $62. It is the piece that shows what hemp does after ten washes, and the price makes it an easy test.
