A chore coat is a French work jacket: straight cut, patch pockets, buttons up the front, no lining. It was built for farm labor and it still works because the shape is simple. Open over a tee, it reads relaxed. Buttoned over an oxford, it reads considered. It is the easiest third layer a man can own, and the one I reach for most between October and March in South Florida.
Here are six worth buying, checked for fiber and fit on the brands’ own sites, and three ways to wear one. This post contains commissionable links. Images were made with AI from the brands’ product photos.
What to look for in a chore coat
Weight first. A 10 to 12 oz cotton is the sweet spot for most of the country: enough body to hold a shape, light enough to wear over a tee. Under 8 oz reads like a shirt. Over 14 oz is a fall jacket.
Then pockets. The classic has one chest pocket and two lower patch pockets, all plain. Flap pockets push it toward a field jacket. Neither is wrong, but know which one you are buying.
Then fiber. Cotton canvas, corduroy, moleskin and hemp twill all age well. Nylon blends don’t soften and don’t fade, which defeats the point.
Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket
The Ojai Jacket in Washed Indigo Corduroy is 12 oz organic cotton corduroy, bleach-washed, $248. One plain chest patch pocket, two lower patch pockets, no pocket buttons. The silhouette is easy to layer. It also comes in Soil. The washed indigo fades like denim. The Ojai Jacket review compares bourbon and washed indigo and covers sizing.
Alex Mill Garment Dyed Chore Jacket
The Garment Dyed Chore Jacket in Canvas is 100 percent cotton, $225, in French Navy, Einkorn and Dusty Olive. This one has two flap chest pockets plus two lower patch pockets, and the canvas is light enough for a Florida evening. True to size; a medium measures a 47 inch chest. The softest, most washed option on the list.
Jungmaven Olympic Jacket
The Olympic Jacket is 10 oz hemp twill, 55 percent hemp and 45 percent organic cotton, garment-dyed, $242, in eleven colors. Classic French chore cut with patch pockets. It is unisex sizing, and a large was in stock in most colors when I checked. Hemp twill breaks in faster than cotton canvas.
Sid Mashburn Chore Jacket in Corduroy
The Chore Jacket in Corduroy is 8-wale corduroy in 100 percent cotton with horn buttons, $425, in navy. Unlined, simple shape, clean patch pockets, and an easy fit through the body. The dressiest chore coat here, and the one that works two-buttons-done over a knit polo.
Corridor Misha Overshirt
Technically an overshirt, but the Misha at 10 oz cotton twill with four pockets does the chore coat job at $295. Not slim. Wear it open with two middle buttons done. Natural, Tan, Navy and Black.
Casatlantic Uniform Tropical Aertex Jacket
The UNIFORM Tropical Aertex Jacket is about $201 in khaki or brown, designed and made in Casablanca. Aertex is an open-weave cotton, so this is the chore coat for 85 degrees. US checkout is duties-included; returns are 14 days with a $30 fee.
How a chore coat should fit
A chore coat should fit like a roomy shirt. The shoulder seam sits on your shoulder bone, the body clears a sweater, and the sleeve stops at the wrist. Taylor Stitch cuts its medium Ojai for a 40 inch chest, and the jacket measures 45. That 5 inches is the room you layer into. Here is how each pick runs, from the brands’ size charts and fit notes.
| Jacket | Fit note from the brand | Medium, chest | Returns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taylor Stitch Ojai | Sized by chest: a medium fits a 40 inch chest | 45 in | 21 days, free in the continental US |
| Alex Mill Garment Dyed Chore Jacket | True to size; the 6 foot 3 model wears a medium | 47 in | 21 days, $9 fee on returns, free exchanges |
| Jungmaven Olympic | Unisex sizing; sleeves end above the wrist by design | 45 in | 30 days, unworn and unwashed |
| Sid Mashburn Chore Jacket | Easy fit; a medium fits a 40 to 42 inch chest | Not listed | 45 days |
| Corridor Misha | The 6 foot 1 model wears a medium | 45 in | 14 days |
| Casatlantic Uniform | Hip length with waist tabs; the 5 foot 10 model wears a medium | 47 in | 14 days |
Two picks break the pattern. Casatlantic’s Uniform is short, at 24.5 inches down the back in a medium. Jungmaven cuts the Olympic’s sleeves short on purpose, at 24 inches from the shoulder seam. Mashburn lists body sizes only, so match your chest measurement to its chart.
Three ways to wear a chore coat
Open over a henley is the default. Tonal works: indigo over indigo, olive over stucco, as long as the textures differ. Open over a white or bone tee is the cleaner version and the one that photographs best. Buttoned to the top over a tee with your hands in the lower pockets is the coldest-day option and the one that reads most like the original work jacket.
Five chore coat outfits, piece by piece
Each outfit starts with one of the six coats above. Every piece was checked on the brand’s site for fiber, price and stock.
Tonal indigo
Cord and terry in the same indigo read as two textures, not a uniform. Khaki canvas pants break up the blue.
- Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket in Washed Indigo Corduroy: $248, 12 oz organic cotton corduroy
- Taylor Stitch Sunset Henley in Washed Indigo Terry: $128, 14 oz organic cotton French terry
- Sid Mashburn Garment-Dyed Brush Pant in Khaki Canvas: $185, cotton canvas
The marina
Navy canvas over washed chambray, with khaki chinos. Every piece is washed or garment-dyed, so nothing looks stiff or new.
- Alex Mill Garment Dyed Chore Jacket in Canvas: $225, 100 percent cotton canvas
- Alex Mill Mill Shirt in Washed Chambray: $155, 100 percent cotton
- Wythe Flat Front Cotton Linen Twill Chino in Camp Khaki: $228, 65 percent cotton, 35 percent linen
One fiber, head to toe
All three pieces are 55 percent hemp and 45 percent organic cotton, in twill or jersey. The Jungmaven guide covers the rest of the line.
- Jungmaven Olympic Jacket in Olive Green: $242, 10 oz hemp twill
- Jungmaven Baja Tee in Stucco Beige: $62, 7 oz hemp jersey
- Jungmaven Pacific Coast Pant in Coyote: $264, 10 oz hemp twill
The office
A bone oxford and a clean gabardine pant make the cord read like a sport coat. Do up two buttons. The Sid Mashburn guide covers the brand’s casual pieces.
- Sid Mashburn Chore Jacket in Corduroy: $425, 8-wale cotton corduroy
- Knickerbocker Beefy Cotton Oxford in Bone: $195, 6.5 oz, 100 percent cotton
- Knickerbocker Canal TwillForm Pant in Khaki: $265, 100 percent cotton gabardine
- Sid Mashburn Handsewn Penny Loafer in Chocolate Suede: $375, suede
The boardwalk
Three 100 percent cotton pieces from one brand, all 9 to 10 oz, so the weights match. Wear the Misha open.
- Corridor Misha Overshirt in Natural: $295, 10 oz cotton twill
- Corridor Garment Dye Tee: $95, 9 oz cotton jersey
- Corridor Wide Twill Pant in Tan: $265, 9 oz cotton twill
Chore coat vs. overshirt vs. trucker jacket
A chore coat has a shirt collar, patch pockets and a straight hem. An overshirt is lighter, usually shirting weight, and has a shirttail hem. A trucker jacket is shorter, sits at the waist, and has a pointed yoke and flap chest pockets. If you own one of each, you have every fall layer covered. For the overshirt, start with the overshirt guide. For the trucker, start with the corduroy jacket guide.
Chore coat fabrics compared
The cloth decides how a chore coat wears, warms and ages. The weights below come from jackets listed on brand sites.
| Fabric | Weights found | What it does | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton canvas | 10.5 to 12.5 oz | Firm, closely woven cotton that breaks in and fades with wear | 3sixteen Shop Jacket, 10.5 oz; Taylor Stitch Ryder Jacket, 12.5 oz |
| Corduroy | 8.5 to 12 oz | Cotton pile in ribs called wales; wider wales feel softer and shine more | Taylor Stitch Ojai, 12 oz; Sid Mashburn, 8-wale |
| Moleskin | 14.5 oz | Heavy cotton with a short, thick, velvety nap on one side | Taylor Stitch Ojai in French Blue Moleskin |
| Hemp twill | 10 oz; hemp canvas runs to about 17 oz | Breathes, blocks wind and softens with every wash | Jungmaven Olympic, 10 oz |
| Wool | About 10 oz, felted | Felted or boiled for insulation; usually dry clean only | Buck Mason Felted Chore Coat, 340 gsm |
The six coats above are cotton and hemp. For moleskin, Taylor Stitch makes the Ojai Jacket in French Blue Moleskin, 14.5 oz organic cotton, at $248. For wool, Sid Mashburn’s Chore Jacket in Navy Wool Melton is English wool at $425. Buck Mason’s Felted Chore Coat is 340 gsm felted merino at $268, though Buck Mason prints no percentage. Both wool coats are dry clean only. To read any of these labels yourself, start with the natural fiber clothing guide.
Break-in and care
Canvas breaks in with wear, and hemp softens with every wash. Taylor Stitch says its corduroy builds character over the years. Jungmaven says garment dyeing gives the Olympic subtle color variation and a softer texture.
- Follow the label. Taylor Stitch and Jungmaven say wash cold or cool and tumble dry low. Alex Mill says wash cold and line dry.
- Turn cord inside out before washing, as Faherty’s care notes for its corduroy shirt advise.
- Let heavy hemp tumble. Jungmaven says the dryer helps heavier pieces hold their shape, while line drying can stretch them.
- Keep wool out of the washer. Mashburn’s melton and Buck Mason’s felted coat are dry clean only. Between cleanings, brush wool after wearing and rest it a day, as Woolmark advises.
Frequently asked questions
Should a chore coat be fitted or loose?
Loose enough to layer over a sweater, fitted enough that the shoulder seam sits on your shoulder. Most brands cut it a touch roomy on purpose.
What weight should a chore coat be?
10 to 12 oz for three-season wear. Under 8 oz is a shirt jacket. Over 14 oz is a fall coat.
Can you wear a chore coat to the office?
Yes, in a solid color over an oxford or a knit polo. The Mashburn corduroy and the Alex Mill navy canvas are the two here that dress up.
How do you wash a chore coat?
Wash cold and inside out, then follow the label. Taylor Stitch, Jungmaven and Sid Mashburn say tumble dry low. Alex Mill says line dry. Corduroy and canvas both shrink a little on hot cycles. Garment-dyed pieces fade at the seams first, which is the point.
Should you size up in a chore coat?
Usually not. The six coats above are already cut with room. Taylor Stitch’s medium Ojai is made for a 40 inch chest and measures 45. Take your normal size for a shirt or light sweater underneath. Size up only if you plan to wear a chunky knit under it.
Is a chore coat warm enough for winter?
Not on its own where winters are cold. Most chore coats are unlined cotton, so the warmth comes from what you wear under them. For colder days, pick heavier cloth. Taylor Stitch’s moleskin Ojai is 14.5 oz, and Buck Mason’s felted merino version is built for insulation. In mild winters, cotton over a sweater is enough.
