An overshirt is a shirt cut to be worn open over a tee. Slightly longer, slightly roomier, usually heavier than a dress shirt, with a shirttail hem instead of a jacket hem. It is the layer that gets a man from September to April in most of the country and from November to March in Florida. I own several and wear one most days: a button-up layered open, or two buttons done over a tee.

Eight below, all natural fiber, checked on each brand’s site. Then three ways to wear one, shot on the same model. This post contains commissionable links. Images were made with AI from the brands’ product photos.

What separates an overshirt from a shirt

Weight and cut. A dress shirt is 4 oz and tailored through the body. An overshirt starts around 6 oz and goes to 12 or more, with a straighter body and room across the chest for a tee or a henley underneath. Brands that make good ones say so: Wythe tells you to buy your normal size because the flannel is meant to layer. Knickerbocker says its Brother Flannel has enough structure to wear as both a shirt and an overshirt.

Wythe Washed Flannel Workshirt

The Washed Flannel Workshirt in Glacier Plaid is 100 percent cotton brushed both sides, midweight, $188, with sixteen plaids in stock. Faded 1940s plaid, two chest pockets, pre-washed. The brand designed it to be worn open over a tee, and a pearlsnap version in the same fabric is on the site at the same price.

Corridor Misha Overshirt

The Misha Overshirt is 10 oz cotton twill, four pockets, $295, in Natural, Tan, Navy and Black. Inspired by workwear and softened for everyday wear. Not slim. The clean, undyed version is the one to pair with a denim jacket you already own.

Knickerbocker Market Compact Cotton Overshirt

The Market Compact Cotton Overshirt in Moss is dense brushed twill woven in Portugal, $295. The brand’s description is the brief: a relaxed overshirt for everyday layering, over a tee or a sweater. Large through XXL when I checked. Its sibling, the Brother Flannel in Mint and Brown Plaid, is $250 and explicitly built to work both ways.

Taylor Stitch Cutter Overshirt

The Cutter Overshirt is 12.5 oz organic cotton twill with chambray trim, $178, in Lighthouse, Canal and Buzzard checks. A straighter fit through the body, true to size. The heaviest here, and the one that stands in for a light jacket.

Save Khaki United Work Shirt in Cotton Hemp

The Work Shirt in Cotton Hemp is 55 percent hemp, 45 percent cotton, 4 oz, pigment-dyed, $180. The lightest overshirt on the list and the one for a Florida winter. The page says relaxed and modern fit; the 6 foot 2 model wears large, so consider an XL if you want it roomy.

Alex Crane Cloud Flannel

The Cloud Flannel in Indigo Lines is peached organic cotton, $148. A soft striped flannel that works as a two-buttons-done overshirt over a henley. The brand cuts easy; the 5 foot 10 model wears medium.

Portuguese Flannel Stalia

The Stalia in Relaxed Fit is about $161 and is the one Portuguese Flannel cut as an overshirt. Brown and cream plaid. Euro pricing and 14-day international returns, so measure before ordering.

Jungmaven Topanga Shirt

The Topanga Shirt is 10 oz hemp twill, classic fit with roomy shoulders, and the brand says to wear it as a jacket. It was on final-sale markdown at $169 from $242 when I checked, so confirm your size is in stock.

Three ways to wear an overshirt

Open over a henley or tee, sleeves down, is the everyday version. Buttoned to the second button and tucked loosely in front with the sleeves rolled twice turns the same flannel into a shirt for dinner. Thrown open over a crewneck sweater is the cold-morning version and the reason to buy your normal size instead of sizing down.

The Misha does the same three jobs in twill: two middle buttons done over a tee, fully buttoned and untucked over a wide pant, or open over a henley with the sleeves pushed up.

How an overshirt fits different builds

Same three pieces, three builds. The overshirt is the trick: worn open, it adds shoulder on a narrow frame and hides nothing on a bigger one.

Frequently asked questions

Should you size up for an overshirt?

Only if the brand cuts it as a shirt. Wythe, Corridor and Knickerbocker cut theirs to layer, so buy your normal size. Save Khaki’s hemp work shirt is a modern fit, so go up one.

What do you wear under an overshirt?

A tee, a henley or a light crewneck sweater. Keep the base layer neutral and let the overshirt carry the pattern or color.

Overshirt vs. shacket?

Same thing. Shacket is a marketing word for a heavier overshirt, usually with some structure. The Cutter at 12.5 oz is what most brands would call a shacket.

What is the best weight for an overshirt?

Six to 10 oz for most of the year. Twelve oz and up for actual cold. Four oz hemp for Florida.
