Fall on the coast means warm afternoons and cool nights. These eight outfits handle both. Each look lists every piece, the fiber, the price and where to buy it.
I live in South Florida. Fall here starts late and still hits the mid 80s by noon. So every look below starts light. One layer over a tee, natural fibers and earth tones. When the air finally turns, add a sweater and keep going.
How to build a fall outfit that works in the heat
Start with one light layer over a tee or a knit polo. An overshirt or chore coat gives you the fall look without trapping heat. Take it off at lunch and the outfit still works.
Stick to natural fibers. Cotton, linen blends and merino breathe. Polyester fleece holds sweat against you all afternoon.
Change the colors before you change the weight. Olive, rust, navy, tobacco and cream read as fall even in a light cotton shirt.
Wear loafers, suede derbies or suede sneakers instead of boots. Save the boots for the first real cold front.
Look 1: Overshirt, white tee, cream chinos
This is my default from October through Thanksgiving. I own the Faherty Lehi Canyon Overshirt ($198) and wear it open over a white tee. It is 100 percent organic cotton with button-flap chest pockets. It looks like a jacket and wears like a shirt.
Under it goes the Buck Mason Slub Classic Tee in White ($48). I own several. It is a 145 GSM slub jersey knit at Buck Mason’s own mill in Pennsylvania. The fit is classic with a straight hem.
For pants, the Wythe Flat Front Cotton Linen Twill Chino in Unbleached ($228). It is 65 percent cotton and 35 percent linen, woven from undyed yarn, in a full vintage military cut. Wythe says measurements can vary by up to an inch, so check the size chart.
Prefer hemp? The Jungmaven Baja Tee ($62) is 55 percent hemp and 45 percent organic cotton, made in the USA. The overshirt guide has more ways to wear this layer.
Look 2: Corduroy jacket and denim
Corduroy says fall before the weather does. The Taylor Stitch Ojai Jacket in Soil Corduroy ($248) is 12 oz organic cotton corduroy cut like a chore coat.
Pair it with the Taylor Stitch Democratic Jean in Mid Wash Organic Selvedge ($178). It is a 14 oz organic cotton selvedge denim. The mid wash keeps two brown tones from blending together.
Finish with the Grant Stone Unlined Derby in Sand Suede ($395). It is Goodyear welted, built in Grant Stone’s own factory in China, and comes in standard and wide widths.
Want a trucker cut instead? Save Khaki United makes a Wide Wale Corduroy Trucker Jacket. The corduroy jacket guide compares both styles.
Look 3: Flannel shirt, open, over a tee
Florida flannel has to be light. The Corridor Vintage Plaid Flannel in Blue ($215) is a 5 oz garment-washed cotton. Most workwear flannels run twice that weight.
Wear it open over the Knickerbocker T-Shirt in Milk ($75), a 6.5 oz Portuguese jersey made in Portugal. The Sid Mashburn Garment-Dyed Brush Pant in Khaki Canvas ($185) finishes it. It is a painter’s pant with reinforced knees and a relaxed leg.
Corridor cuts a regular fit. Its 6 foot 2 model wears a medium.
Look 4: Knit polo and pleated trousers
A knit polo looks put together without a jacket. I own several of Todd Snyder’s knit polos and wear them all fall.
For this look, the Taylor Stitch Nichols Polo in Sable ($178) is 95 percent organic cotton and 5 percent cashmere. It is a 12-gauge knit with a milano rib collar that holds its shape.
Pair it with the Wythe Pleated Cotton Linen Twill Chino in Faded Olive ($228). Same cotton and linen blend as Look 1, with pleats that add room through the thigh.
Look 5: Chore coat, henley, chinos
I own the Faherty High Ridge Twill Studio Jacket in Stony Brook Wash ($298). It is organic cotton twill with three pockets and antique brass hardware. The indigo wash means it arrives soft instead of stiff.
Under it, the Wythe Cotton Henley in Faded Olive ($148). It is a midweight cotton knit with a deep three-button placket, made in Portugal.
For pants, the Knickerbocker Canal TwillForm Pant in Khaki ($265). It is a Portuguese cotton gabardine with a relaxed straight leg and a mid-to-high rise.
Want a heavier coat? The Corridor Misha Overshirt in Natural ($295) is a 10 oz cotton twill with four pockets. The chore coat guide covers eight more.
Look 6: Merino sweater and linen-blend shirt
This is the look for the first cool night. The J.Press Superfine Merino Wool Sweater in Navy ($395) is knit in Scotland in a fine gauge. It layers over a collar without bulk.
Under it goes the Corridor Linen Cotton Shirt in White ($245). It is 55 percent linen and 45 percent cotton with mother-of-pearl buttons.
The Wythe chino in Camp Khaki ($228) keeps the look relaxed. The color is based on the original 1940s US Army chino.
Look 7: Surf-casual weekend
Saturday at the beach, with a breeze off the water. The Katin Hide Pullover in Birch ($49) is heavyweight organic cotton with no front graphic. Birch was the only color in stock in both medium and large on September 29.
Throw the Faherty Belmar Workshirt in Olive Sunset Plaid over it. I own the Belmar. It is a textured double-weave organic cotton, and this plaid was marked down to $74 from $198 on September 29.
The Jungmaven Pacific Coast Pant in Navy ($264) finishes it. It is a 10 oz hemp and organic cotton twill, made in the USA. It has a drawstring and a zip fly.
Look 8: Dinner out
An unstructured blazer, an oxford and loafers. The Faherty Inlet Knit Blazer in Deep Navy Melange ($228) is unlined and soft through the shoulder. It is 85 percent organic cotton and 15 percent recycled polyester.
Want all cotton? The Corridor Twill Blazer in Navy ($325) is a 6 oz Portuguese twill, pigment dyed, with horn buttons.
Under either one, the Knickerbocker Beefy Cotton Oxford in Bone ($195). Knickerbocker says to take your usual size for a classic fit and size up for a relaxed one.
Finish with the Sid Mashburn Handsewn Penny Loafer in Chocolate Suede ($375). It is handsewn in Portugal with a slightly higher vamp for comfort.
What to buy first
Three pieces carry most of these looks: a cotton overshirt, a pair of cotton-linen chinos and a light flannel. Start there. Add the corduroy jacket or the knit polo next.

Frequently asked questions
What should men wear in fall?
Layer one light piece over a tee or a knit polo. An overshirt, chore coat or corduroy jacket does the job. Wear natural fibers and earth tones, plus loafers or suede shoes until it gets cold.
What colors should men wear in fall?
Olive, rust, navy, tobacco brown and cream. Keep tees and base layers neutral and put the color in the outer layer.
Can you wear linen in the fall?
Yes, in a blend and in darker colors. Cotton-linen chinos and linen-cotton shirts breathe on warm fall days. Swap bright white linen for olive, khaki or navy.
What shoes go with fall outfits for men?
Suede derbies, penny loafers and clean suede sneakers. Sand, tobacco and chocolate suede all read as fall. Save boots for real cold.
