Thanksgiving calls for clothes that look sharp and still give after the second plate. Here are six Thanksgiving outfits for men, from backyard casual to dressed up, all in natural fibers. Each one lists every piece with its price and fiber.

None of these pieces relies on synthetic stretch. The comfort comes from the cut: knits, pleats, drawstrings and adjustable waist tabs. Five of the six Thanksgiving outfits here have a layer you can take off when the kitchen heats up.
Casual family dinner
This is the default Thanksgiving: dinner at a relative’s house, jeans welcome. A soft flannel does most of the work. Wear a henley under it, or on its own if the kitchen runs warm.
- Flannel: Buck Mason Pacific Twill Flannel One Pocket Shirt, $158. 100 percent cotton, a 4 oz twill brushed on both sides. Buck Mason calls it the lightest flannel it makes. Every size is in stock.
- Henley: Corridor Waffle Henley, $145. 100 percent cotton waffle knit in natural, garment dyed and made in Portugal. Every size is in stock.
- Jeans: Faherty Selvedge 5-Pocket Denim, $348. It is 13 oz selvedge in 100 percent organic cotton, made in Japan, with a clean indigo rinse. Classic straight fit, 32 inch inseam, waist sizes 29 to 40 in stock. More in our Faherty review.
- Boots: Grant Stone Diesel Boot, $435. A plain-toe boot in Horween Chromexcel leather, with a full-grain kip lining and a vegetable-tanned insole. Nearly every size and width is in stock.
Why it works: brushed cotton and dark denim look put together at any family table. The classic-fit flannel stays loose after the second plate.
Dressed-up dinner
For the house with cloth napkins and a seating chart. A cashmere crewneck over an oxford collar looks dressed without a tie.
- Sweater: Todd Snyder Cashmere Crewneck, $328. 100 percent cashmere in a slim fit, here in tobacco. Every size from XS to XXL is in stock. I own a few of Todd Snyder’s cashmere sweaters. More in our Todd Snyder review.
- Shirt: Wythe Oxford Cloth Button Down, $160. 100 percent cotton in a blue and white stripe, made in India. The collar is unlined, so it rolls instead of standing stiff. Tall sizes are available.
- Chinos: Alex Mill Flat Front Chino in Vintage Wash, $175. 100 percent cotton, non-stretch, washed and garment dyed in dark navy. Adjustable tabs at the waist give you room after dessert. Alex Mill says they fit true to size.
- Loafers: Sid Mashburn Handsewn Penny Loafer, $375. Chocolate suede with moccasin construction, handsewn in Portugal. Mashburn says each pair gets an hour of hand stitching. Six of 13 sizes are in stock.
Why it works: the knit softens the oxford, and suede keeps the outfit from going stiff. For more dressed but relaxed pairings, see our smart casual outfits for men.
Warm-weather Thanksgiving
For a Thanksgiving in Florida, Texas or Southern California, where the afternoon can still run warm. Swap the sweater for a fine knit polo and the jeans for cotton and linen.
- Polo: Taylor Stitch Nichols Polo, $124.60 on sale, down from $178. 95 percent organic cotton and 5 percent cashmere in a fine 12 gauge knit, in sable. A full button placket makes it read closer to a shirt. Every size is in stock, and Taylor Stitch takes returns for 21 days.
- Trousers: Wythe Pleated Cotton Linen Twill Chino, $228. 65 percent cotton and 35 percent linen in faded olive, made in India. Wythe cuts them full, like the original military chinos. Sizes 28 to 38 are in stock. More options in our best linen pants roundup.
- Loafers: Grant Stone Traveler Penny, $395. Bourbon calf suede from Charles F. Stead, on a leather sole. Grant Stone says it wears the pair sockless with lightweight fabrics in summer.
- Belt: Billykirk No. 288 Center Bar Belt, $125. Vegetable-tanned, full-grain tan leather, 1.5 inches wide, made in the USA with global materials. Use Billykirk’s measurements for this exact belt; do not treat its belt size as a universal conversion from trouser waist.
Why it works: cotton and linen breathe in a warm dining room. Suede loafers and a leather belt keep it ready for dinner.
Friendsgiving
Friendsgiving runs looser: a potluck, a long table, maybe a fire pit after. An overshirt over a tee covers all of it.
- Overshirt: Corridor Misha Overshirt, $295. 100 percent cotton, a 10 oz twill in navy, with two chest pockets and two hip pockets. Every size is in stock. Our overshirt guide covers eight in natural fibers.
- Tee: Buck Mason Slub Classic Tee, $48. 100 percent cotton slub jersey at 145 GSM in olive drab, sewn in Mohnton, Pennsylvania. I own this one. Olive drab is in stock from L to XXL.
- Cords: Save Khaki United Wide Wale Cord Easy Chino, $160. 100 percent cotton 8-wale corduroy with a drawstring waist, made in Los Angeles from imported fabric. Black comes in every size but L, and rye grass runs XS to L.
- Sneakers: Sid Mashburn Low-Top Lace-Up Sneaker, $195. Navy suede with a calf leather lining and a white rubber sole, made in Portugal. It comes with flat waxed cotton laces and round suede laces.
Why it works: the drawstring cords stay easy through a long meal. The overshirt comes off when the room fills up. Prefer the cord on top? See our corduroy jackets for men.
Football and leftovers
For the couch hours between the second game and the second plate. A matching cotton sweatsuit looks deliberate in a way old gym clothes do not.
- Hoodie: Todd Snyder Foundation Hoodie, $128. 100 percent cotton loopback French terry at 380 gsm, made in Portugal. Classic fit, roomy through the chest. I own Todd Snyder’s terry hoodies.
- Sweatpants: Todd Snyder Foundation Sweatpant, $128. The same 380 gsm cotton terry, with an elastic drawcord waist. The 29 inch inseam gathers at a ribbed cuff.
- Tee: Buck Mason Pima Classic Tee, $48. 100 percent Supima cotton at 140 GSM, made in Pennsylvania. Wear it alone when the hoodie gets too warm.
- Cap: Faherty Sunwashed Twill Baseball Hat, $48. 100 percent cotton with a faded wash and an adjustable buckle, in coastal sage.
Why it works: all-cotton terry breathes on a crowded couch, and a matched set looks planned. The cap covers morning bed head.
Hosting at home
Hosting means hours at the stove and minutes at the table. Wear layers that come off fast and shoes you can stand in for hours.
- Cardigan: Todd Snyder Cashmere Cardigan, $368. 100 percent cashmere in a 12 gauge knit, with five buttons and a classic tapered fit. S to L are in stock. XL and XXL are sold out.
- Thermal: Knickerbocker Heirloom Flat Knit Thermal, $125. 100 percent cotton rib jacquard at 310 gsm, cut and sewn in Portugal. Knickerbocker gave it a longer body and closer fit so it tucks in. It comes in ecru, navy and oat grey.
- Pants: Corridor Wide Twill Pant, $265. 100 percent cotton 9 oz twill in tan, pigment dyed, with a wide leg. Made in Mauritius. Six of nine sizes are in stock.
- Slippers: Sid Mashburn Casa Pantufa Moccasin, $295. A shearling-lined suede moccasin in acorn. Mashburn notes that casa pantufa is Portuguese for house slipper. Every size from 8 to 13 is in stock.
Why it works: the cardigan comes off at the stove and goes back on at the table. The wide twill leg leaves room to move and room to eat.
What not to wear
Knowing what to wear to Thanksgiving is half the job. The other half is skipping these.
- Tight waistbands. You will sit for hours and eat more than usual. Pick pleats, a drawstring or adjustable waist tabs over a slim, rigid chino.
- Stiff collars. A starched point collar fights a sweater and looks formal in a family room. An unlined button-down collar rolls under a crewneck.
- Choose a weight and fit you find comfortable indoors. Breathability depends on the fabric’s construction and finish as well as its fiber.
- New shoes. Break them in before the holiday, or wear a pair you already know.
Frequently asked questions
What should a man wear to Thanksgiving dinner?
A man should wear a layer he can take off, pants with an easy waist and clean shoes. For most family dinners, that means a flannel or sweater, dark jeans or chinos, and boots or loafers. Ask the host how dressy it is, then match it.
Is Thanksgiving dressy or casual?
Thanksgiving is usually casual to smart casual. Jeans or chinos with a sweater or button-up fit most family tables. Some hosts dress it up with oxfords and loafers. When you are unsure, wear a cashmere crewneck over an oxford shirt. It looks dressed without a tie and works at either table.
Can you wear jeans to Thanksgiving?
Yes. Dark, clean jeans work at most Thanksgiving dinners. Skip rips and heavy fading. Pair them with a flannel, a henley or a cashmere crewneck, and wear boots or loafers instead of running shoes. If the host calls it a dressy dinner, switch to chinos or wool trousers.
